Lincoln’s 4th XV suffered their first home defeat of the season as they went down 24-0 against Cleethorpes at the Lindum.
The wet and muddy conditions made play difficult, but two breakaway tries from Craig Collier and Francis Clemence, along with an Adam Johnston penalty, gave the visitors a 17-0 lead going in at the break.
Lincoln continued to put pressure on the visitors but Cleethorpes hit back with the only try of the second half through Johnston.
Captain Chris Weston believes it was a good game of rugby but was disappointed with the result.
“It was a good game of rugby played in terrible conditions,” said Weston.
“Both sides played well in an end to end game, but three breakaway tries cost us”
Full Back Dave McGrath felt that wet conditions and bad luck prevented Lincoln’s Fourth XV from getting anything out of the game.
“We really enjoyed the game, but we were very unlucky,” said McGrath.
“I feel we could have got points on the board, they didn’t do any better than us, but the slippery conditions didn’t help and I think we were just unlucky.”
Cleethorpes opened the scoring with Collier intercepting a loose pass before racing the length of the field for a superb individual try, which Johnston converted.
The visitors extended their lead with another breakaway try soon after.Clemence found a gap in the Lincoln defence before racing clear from halfway for an excellent try.Johnston added the extras.
Lincoln continued to match their opponents but failed to capitalise on possession. An excellent passing move ended with a knock on by the home side.
Johnston sent a penalty attempt wide before successfully converting another to put the visitors 17-0 in front going in at the break.
Cleethorpes completed the scoring within five minutes of the restart as Johnston ran in for a try, which he also converted.
Lincoln continued to attack their opponents, with substitute Neil Weston showing a lot of promise both on the wing and at full back, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Fourth XV’s first home defeat of the season.
